The director of “Poor Things” and his leading lady traveled to Athens to “compose” a surreal visual fairy tale
Before filming “Poor Things”the distinguished filmmaker George Lanthimos and the Oscar-winning Emma Stone traveled to Tinos for the filming of the short film “Vlihi”, which premiered in Greece in 2022, while this year it was “found” at the New York Film Festival. To celebrate the project, the director envisioned a black and white shoot on location in Athens and Piraeus for the prestigious W’s Art Issue.
“I love the contradictions you find in the city: the mix of the very modern and rather ugly next to the very beautiful. We wanted to do a combination of large landscapes and intimate portraits. And we wanted to tell a little storyLanthimos told the magazine.

The short film was shot on black and white film without sound in Tinos. “It was winter and there was no one there – not even tourists,” Lanthimos continued. Stone plays a young woman who oscillates between the devastation of losing her husband and the animalistic instinct for survival. In the interview, the star admits that “I like silence. It’s a nice thing to have no pressure to use words to communicate. There is something wonderful about being able to speak with just your eyes and body».

They took eight outdoor photos in one day, using natural light, while driving quickly from place to place. Lanthimos chose all the locations: a city street with a cruise ship in the background, a basketball court by the bay, a palm tree next to a wire fence. For a particularly dramatic shot, the filmmaker asked Stone to run down a busy freeway and pose in the middle of it.

“There is absolutely nothing Emma can’t do“, said Lanthimos characteristically about his protagonist. “She is fearless».
The movie “Poor Things” with Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe is expected in American theaters on December 8.
