Frances Sternhagen, the Tony Award-winning actress known for her role as a formidable woman on stage in “Driving Miss Daisy” and on screen in “Cheers, “Misery” and “Sex and the City,” died at her home in New York. He was 93 years old.

Her son, John Carlin, confirmed her death on Instagram. “Frannie,” he wrote. “Mom, Frances Sternhagen. On Monday evening, November 27, she died peacefully at home, a month and a half shy of her 94th birthday… Fly on, Frannie. The curtain falls on a life lived so richly, passionately, humbly and generously».

Sternhagen won two Tonys for her performances in Neil Simon’s “Good Doctor” (1974) and Augustus Gage’s “Heiress” (1995). On television, Frances Sternhagen starred as Dr. Carter’s (Noah Wyle) grandmother on “ER” and as Cliff’s (John Ratzenberger) mother on “Cheers,” roles that earned her two Emmy nominations.

She also played Bunny McDougal, the evil mother of Trey (Kyle McLachlan) and mother-in-law to Charlotte (Kristin Davis), on Sex and the City, for which she received a third Emmy nomination. She also played the role of Brenda Lee Johnson’s (Keira Sedgwick) mother in ‘The Closer’.
