It ‘s winter, and you’re probably noticing your skin becoming drier, cracked and irritated. Fortunately, this is perfectly normal and there are solutions.
As the seasons change from summer to autumn and from autumn to winter, there is less moisture in the air, which means that water evaporates much faster than the skin. In fact, this applies to all skin types, even oily.
Seasonally, dry skin is due to the reduction of the amount of lipids and the ability of the outer layer of the skin to absorb water. However, it can be due to millions of other reasons.
Therefore, we analyze below the five most common causes of dry skin.
1. The winter weather
One of the most important causes of dry skin is the change of seasons. It is no surprise, then, that winter is the most common culprit. The reason is that cold air has less ability to transfer moisture. In particular, drier air makes the skin more prone to transdermal water loss. Fortunately, usually a little hydration with an emollient or nourishing lotion is enough to restore skin moisture levels. However, for severe dryness or skin with cracks and fractures, it is best to consult your dermatologist.
2. Skin diseases such as eczema
Severe dry skin can often develop into astringent eczema – something dermatologists often refer to as “winter itching”. Asteroid eczema often causes itching and can be relieved with lifestyle changes. The most common are gentle skin care, avoiding harsh soaps, plenty of hydration, especially immediately after bathing, and avoiding hot showers. Also, eczema can often be improved with topical medications such as cortisone forms that reduce inflammation. If for any reason, however, your eczema does not go away with these treatments, consult your dermatologist.
3. Nutritional insufficiency
Although rare, a lack of a specific nutrient, such as zinc, can cause dry and chapped skin. This is often corrected by reversing the underlying deficiency, for example, by taking a specific dietary supplement. Although there are genetic predispositions that can lead to certain nutritional deficiencies, for those who do not have such a predisposition or underlying condition, maintaining a balanced diet is usually sufficient as a prevention. However, if you think that your dry skin may be due to a nutritional deficiency, consult your doctor to guide you accordingly.
4. Genetic causes
Some inherited skin disorders, such as keratoderma or psoriasis, can cause dryness and cracking of the skin. If you suspect that your dry skin may have a genetic component, the best solution is to consult your dermatologist.
5. Ingredients that irritate your skin
Although many of us cared a little more about our skin during lockdowns, we all incorporated more dehydrating ingredients into our daily routine, such as alcohol-based hand soaps and soap.
Despite their antimicrobial benefits, these ingredients can dry the skin terribly. They can also cause irritating skin contact dermatitis, which leads to more redness and cracking of the skin. Therefore, the use of hand cream with hyaluronic acid and tiles can make a big difference and keep the skin hydrated.
