British Foreign Secretary Liz Tras will travel to Moscow on Thursday for talks with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on tensions on the Russian-Ukrainian border.
Ms Trass, the first British diplomat to visit Russia in four years, is expected to call on the Russian government to “de-escalate tensions and end its unprovoked aggression”.
He will reiterate to Lavrov the constant effect of British warnings that an invasion of Ukraine will create a “prolonged impasse” at a huge cost to Russia, both economically and at the cost of human lives.
In a Twitter post on Sunday, Ms Tras commented that “the depths of Russia’s attempts to undermine and threaten Ukraine are clear.”
He added that Russia’s actions show that “allegations that it has no plans to invade are false.”
A Downing Street spokesman said on Friday that British security intelligence confirmed the US conclusion that Russia was planning to launch a fictitious attack on it to justify an invasion of Ukraine.
Ms Tras was due to travel to Kiev last week to accompany Prime Minister Johnson, but remained in London in solitary confinement due to a coronavirus infection.
On Saturday, Boris Johnson contacted French President Emmanuel Macron, with whom he agreed on the need for a united front by NATO allies.
