According to the ministerial decision, “it is one of the first post-revolutionary settlements based on a plan, on the other hand I have not undergone significant alterations since then, it preserves the architectural features of the buildings of the southern Peloponnese, during the last century and is the appropriate environment of the medieval fort. , which rises at its southwestern end “.
Its urban plan modern Methoni follows the model of the cities of the Ionian Islands and the French cities of southwestern France. It was actually designed by Joseph-Victor Audoy, the French lieutenant colonel of the Engineer of the Moria Campaign.
This plan was approved by the governor Ioannis Kapodistrias on May 4, 1829 and is thus the first urban plan in the history of the modern Greek state.
The Kapodistrian school in Methoni is a mutual school, which was one of the first schools built in the newly formed Greece (in March 1830), by decision of Kapodistrias. It was the first school in the Peloponnese which was built to become mutually beneficial. The construction site was suggested by Kapodistrias himself when he visited Methoni in the spring of 1829. The Kapodistrian school operated until 1935/6, when it was abandoned, and in 1940 was sold to a private individual. It was declared a historical monument in 1951 and its expropriation was completed in 2001. In 2015, its restoration was completed.
It is located on Kapodistrias Street arched bridge, which was built in the early 20th century. It has been designated a historical monument and a work of art.
In Syggrou Square, on the main road, near the entrance of the castle, there is a Venetian well and the primary school, donated by Andreas Syggrou.
The well was built in the NW Venetian period (1686-1715) and has a diameter of 2.6 meters and today has a depth of 4 meters. This well, along with another near the bridge at the entrance of Methoni, have been designated historical monuments.
The church of Agios Nikolaos has been characterized as a monument, as a remarkable example of ecclesiastical architecture of the years after 1830.
