At a very short distance from the cape of Perdika in Aeginathere is a beautiful green island called Moni, being the property of the Holy Monastery of Chrysoleontissa in Aegina.
Its peculiarity is that its inhabitants they are none other than some wild animals.
For thirty For many years, from 1960 to 1990, the Monastery belonged to the Hellenic Travel Club, to whose members it owes the significant number of wild animals that are now the ecosystem of the island, while since 1962 it has been declared a Park for natural game.
There they live freely in the forest deer Rhodesian species, squirrels but also a lot freezing cold, which are quite familiar to people. Also in the rocky parts of the island climb unmolested wild goats type kri – kri, which often quench their thirst with the sea water. In the past there were other species such as hares and pony ponies, but unfortunately did not survive.
During these three decades, the island operated in an organized manner campingremnants of which you may come across during your tour there.
As for hiking enthusiasts, at the highest point of the island, through a route at the bottom of which you will walk among wild olive trees, spruce and cedar, you will find observatory, a remnant of the Germans, with incredible views of the Saronic Gulf and the surrounding islands. And the roof of the observatory may have fallen over the years, however the coverage offered by the rocky higher passages is certain. These were the reasons why this point was chosen to build the observatory there from the beginning.
It is worth noting that from a young age port in the north of the island, somewhere between the rocks, begins an underground tunnel, which after several hundred meters reaches the observatory.
Nowadays, as comfortable as it has been in the past, it is closed for security reasons.
And while the southeastern side of the island is barren and full of steep cliffs, the northwestern side is full of vegetation, which even reaches so low that it touches the surface of the sea. At this point, especially during the summer months, there is an organized sandy beach with sunbeds and a beach bar for drinks, music and hearty appetizers for all tastes.
In the Monastery there are two beautiful deep blue beaches, in the cool waters of which, in addition to a refreshing swim, you can even go fishing, enjoying unique quiet moments with white gulls and small crabs that roam their smooth rocks. In their arms you will also meet several boats that anchor there especially during the summer months for endless dives, looking for the tranquility of nature that is generously offered to them on the island.
As for your transfer there, it takes place only by boats, both from the port of Aegina and from Perdika, which, at very low cost, depart at regular intervals from 10 in the morning until 6 in the afternoon.
But as long as the island is a protected ecosystem, overnight stay there will be done only by its “permanent” inhabitants, leaving man the joy of tranquility and exploration only at times when the sun is high in the celestial firmament…
