For this weekend, we have selected crime series, with a nice cast, an interesting plot and a lot of twists…
The weekend is just around the corner and there is nothing better than curling up on the sofa and binge-watching a good series, near the Christmas tree, having the right cocooning kit with you: hot drink, blanket and sweets or popcorn.
So keep reading because here’s a list of 5 powerful series suggestions. For this weekend, we have selected crime series, with a nice cast, an interesting plot and a lot of twists.
Let’s discover them!
- Fargo
What about Fargo? Fargo is in a class of its own and every time it comes back it’s easily the television event of the year. So the mood this month is #feelingblessed, because after three years, Noah Hawley’s series is back and needless to say, the wait was worth it. Having already seen the first three episodes of season five, let me state that, yes, Hawley has done his magic again and we are talking about perhaps the top series of this season.
The ‘new’ Fargo stars Ted Lasso’s Juno Temple, Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, Stranger Things’ Joe Keery and Sam Spruell (Taken 3, Doctor Who). Temple is Dot, a seemingly innocent housewife who turns into a total badass the more her past comes back to haunt her – and if this isn’t the role that will finally land her a coveted Emmy, then I honestly don’t know what will. Emmy favorite and Jon Hamm, who found the first truly villainous character of his career, in the person of Roy Tillman, a paranoid sheriff who seems to be leading a sect rather than a state. Joe Keery is Roy’s son Gator, who will do anything to curry favor with his father, while Sam Spruell is a creepy kidnapper who takes it upon himself to bring Dot to Roy – with unpredictable results. As if all that weren’t enough, Dot’s mother-in-law, the powerful “Queen of Debt” (played by the always excellent Jennifer Jason Leigh), comes into play, and she begins to suspect that Dot is not who she thought she was.
All of these characters make up the highly cohesive universe of the most exciting season Fargo has given us in a long time (and the competition is already stiff).
Season 5 of the series is available on COSMOTE TV.
- Time
A favorite crime series that also made a timely return is Time – a BBC production we saw two years ago and how we expected it to return. In case you haven’t seen the first season, the whole story takes place in a British prison. The first cycle, which we talked about here, starred Stephen Graham (Broadwalk Empire, The Irishman) as a role model cop who wants to protect his family and Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings) as a prisoner in the same prison. Together they get involved in a dangerous situation and must choose between their values and their safety.
In the second season of the series, which began airing in November, we remain in prisons, but with protagonists: Bella Ramsey, Jodie Whittaker and Tamara Lawrance. In a women’s prison this time, the story unfolds around the relationships of these three inmates, a 19-year-old drug addict, a lifer and a single mother.
All 2 seasons of the series are available on COSMOTE TV.
- Erinyes
Let’s go now to a series that just premiered on COSMOTE TV and if I can judge from the first episode, we are probably talking about a very powerful “little gem”, which is definitely worth discovering.
The series is set in pre-war Lviv, Ukraine, and our protagonist is a detective named Edward Popielski, played by Marcin Dorocinski (you’ve seen him in The Queen’s Cambie, Vikings: Valhalla, and most recently in the latest Mission Impossible). Although he is extremely bright, he is forced to work only at night because he suffers from photosensitivity seizures. These judgments make him the black sheep of the police, they are also the ones that give him some special visions, which of course help him in his cases.
From what I read after the end of the first episode, the series is based on the books of a Polish author, Marek Krajewski, who is considered something of a living legend in the country for his contribution to detective fiction. Like the author, his hero has a bit of an obsession with Greek mythology – throughout the first episode, we hear about Aeschylus, Xenophon and of course the Erinyes, the goddesses of vengeance who also give their name to this promising Polish crime drama.
The series is available on COSMOTE TV.
