The pop superstar made the revelation in TIME, in an article dedicated to her career on the occasion of being named the magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’.
Towards the end of the article, Swift’s ability to use personal experiences as source material for her songwriting was noted, and the song “Mastermind” from her album Midnights (2022) was cited as evidence.
The singer said she was inspired and wrote the song after watching the Paul Thomas Anderson film starring Daniel Day-Lewis ‘Phantom Thread’.
He explained that he was mainly inspired by the twist ending of the drama film. “Remember that last scene?” he said. “I thought, wouldn’t it be fun to have a verse about being predictable,” he said.
On this particular song, Swift appears to have worked on multiple levels — from the personal to the political, a 2022 magazine article said.
The article details her artistic journey from being rejected as a singer to front country star Kenny Chesney at age 17, to performing on the ‘Eras’ tour.
