The map unfolds the rich tapestry of the city’s modern architectural history, juxtaposing modernist, functionalist, brutalist and postmodern buildings, which are nested within Vienna’s Baroque and Biedermeier majestic cityscape. Through its pages comes to life a range of architectural styles, from the bold and revolutionary to the more traditional and conservative.
These include the American Bar and Loos House by Adolf Loos, Paul Engelmann’s Wittgenstein House, Otto Wagner’s Danube Canal House and Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach’s Villa Beer. But also the Karl-Marx-Hof by Otto Wagner and Karl Ehn as well as the Spittelau Incineration by Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

The map highlights the works of Adolf Loos, who was a key figure in the Viennese architecture and design scene at the beginning of the 20th century. He was opposed to the decorative nature of Fin de Siècle architecture and advocated a more minimalist approach, drawing inspiration from the Vienna Secession spearheaded by Gustav Klimt and the Viennese Jugendstil, the city’s Art Nouveau movement.
Vienna’s reputation as one of the world’s most livable cities is due in part to its unique housing offering, which was heavily influenced by the progressive architecture and ideas of the previous century.

The map includes iconic housing projects such as the Karl-Marx-Hof (Otto Wagner and Karl Ehn, 1927–33) and the Bauhaus-influenced Werkbund Estate (Loos, Lurçat, Rietveld and others, 1929–32). Both were implemented during the “Red Vienna” period under the rule of the Social Democratic Workers’ Party of Austria (1918–1934).
The latter period of the 20th century – from the 1970s to the 1990s – was an experimental phase with post-war Brutalist churches (monumental proportions using cement and geometric stained glass windows) created by emerging architects, such as the Wotruba Church, designed by Fritz Wotruba and Fritz Gerhard Mayr. Other examples are the “sculptural” shop fronts by Hans Hollein, the world’s first Deconstructivist architecture project by Coop Himmelb(l)au, and Hundertwasser’s explosions of color and undulating surfaces.
