George Clooney says Matthew Perry ‘wasn’t happy’ while filming ‘Friends’

George Clooney, 62, said Matthew Perry, who died in October at age 54, had difficulty being happy after landing the role in “Friends” due to alcohol and drug addiction. “It didn’t bring him joy, happiness or peace,” revealed the star.

In an interview with Deadline this Tuesday (19), Clooney recalled that Perry’s dream was to have a role in a sitcom — a dream he achieved when he was chosen to play Chandler Bing in “Friends” in 1994.

However, due to drug addiction, Perry still found it difficult to move forward. “He was a kid and all he said to us, meaning me, Richard Kind and Grant Heslov, was, ‘I just want to be on a sitcom, man. I just want to be on a regular sitcom and I would be the happiest man on Earth,'” Clooney said.

“And he came in probably one of the best ever. He wasn’t happy. It didn’t bring him joy or happiness or peace.”

Clooney explained that the two worked side by side every day and still had no idea what was going through Perry’s mind. At the time, Clooney was filming “ER” while Perry filmed “Friends,” both popular shows in the ’90s.

“We just knew he wasn’t happy and I had no idea he was on, I don’t know, 12 Vicodin [analgésico a base de opioides] a day and all those things he talked about, all those moving things,” Clooney said, referring to Perry’s confessions written in his book “Friends, Love, and That Terrible Thing.”

“And it also shows us that success and money and all those things don’t automatically bring happiness. You have to be happy with yourself and your life.”

The “Ocean’s Eleven” star also recalled his impression of Perry when they first met. “I met Matt when he was 16,” Clooney said. “We used to play table tennis together. He’s about 10 years younger than me.”

“He was a great kid, funny, funny, funny,” the actor continued.

Matthew Perry was found dead in the pool of his Hollywood mansion on October 28. The autopsy report revealed that he died from a lethal amount of ketamine and buprenorphine, the latter used to help treat opioid addiction and reduce pain.
