Opinion – Rosana Hermann: Paolla Oliveira, tell these people to chip away!

by

On Wednesday (20) night, I saw Paolla Oliveira’s name in the most talked about topics on Twitter and, out of curiosity, I clicked on the hashtag. I imagined that she was highlighted in reference to some new professional project, for her performance as a samba player or for some detail about her relationship with Diogo Nogueira.

But not. The “theme” was the actress’ body, more precisely, that she had “gained weight”, “lost her shape” and that “age comes to everyone”. Yes, there are profiles that make this type of comment about Paolla Oliveira, a talented woman, good people, dear, happy and who sambas wonderfully while celebrating her life.

There was a man, who declared himself “a servant of Jesus Christ” in his bio, who commented that “age has arrived for her”, that he has “the arm of a lunch lady”, an expression so prejudiced, misogynistic and unpleasant that it makes us understand why the Messiah never returned to planet Earth.

Fortunately, among the more than 2 million views of this post that comments on the attack on the actress, there are people with common sense. Because anyone who is not unhappy, bitter or repressed can see the grace of Paolla sambando, as she did @fanifraninha when commenting: “God grant that age will come to me in the same way that it did for Paolla Oliveira.”

Yes, I know this is all common on social media, where people who feel shielded by anonymity or physical distance use their profiles to engage in recreational hate, unleash their inner demons, or just generate engagement. We know the game.

But it is always sad to see and review the pathological demand that society imposes on people’s bodies, as if everyone were forced to eternally meet an aesthetic standard, a social armor into which we are all forced to fit, with nothing left or missing. And anyone who does not fit exactly into this expected form will be judged, condemned and stoned in the public squares of social media.

I really hope, from the bottom of my heart, that Paolla doesn’t become aware of these unhappy and cruel people who, by giving up their own happiness, invest their energy in ensuring that everyone else is also unhappy. I hope that she, so wonderful and full of joy, does not allow herself to be contaminated by people with this virulent behavior.

But, if these inelegant comments reach her, here’s my advice: don’t care. These people do have access to all the modernities of our time, but mentally they are still there in the time of chipped stone and, for that reason, the best thing to do, Paolla, is to tell these people to chip away!
