Amy Winehouse’s father sues the singer’s friends for R$4.5 million

Amy Winehouse’s father, Mitch, is suing two of his daughter’s friends for more than 730 thousand pounds (about R$4.5 million) because they allegedly profited from the sale of the singer’s personal property at auction. The information comes from documents obtained by the British newspaper Daily Mail.

Mitch Winehouse, administrator of the singer’s estate, filed a lawsuit in the High Court of London against Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourlay. According to the court document, it alleges that the two sent “various items of Amy’s personal property during her lifetime” to two auctions, one in 2021 and one this year.

He also alleges that by offering the items for sale “in their own names and for their own benefit,” the women “converted” the late artist’s property “to their own use.”

Amy’s father claims £534,000 (around R$2.3 million) from Parry, who, in addition to being a friend, was the singer’s stylist, and £198,000 (around R$1.2 million) from Gourlay.

A statement first issued by a spokesperson for the Estate of Amy Winehouse in November said: “In 2021, Amy’s estate auctioned off items from her life and career, with 30% of the proceeds going to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Two individuals they sold several items at that auction and kept the profits: the items were all Amy-related. This year, they put more Amy-related items up for sale, and together the two auctions generated six-figure sums for each of them.”

“The estate questioned how these items came to them and received no satisfactory answers. Therefore, the estate has initiated legal proceedings to clarify the situation. The Amy Winehouse Foundation will directly benefit if the funds are recovered from any of the defendants,” it further says the pronouncement.

Amy Winehouse died in 2011, aged 27. After investigations, her cause of death was revealed to be accidental due to alcohol poisoning. She would turn 40 on September 14, 2023.
