“I want to be an example” – The Kenyan grandmother, who returned to school at the age of 98, is moved

In a school hall in rural Rift Valley, Kenya, Priscilla Citeney, 99, is taking notes next to her classmates, who are at least eight decades her junior.

Wearing a school uniform, a gray dress and a green sweater, Citeney is said to have returned to the desks to set a good example to her grandchildren and to have a new career.

“I would like to become a doctor as I was a midwife,” she told Reuters, adding that her children supported her decision.

The East African government began subsidizing primary education in 2003, allowing some older members of society who had missed an opportunity to study when they were younger to make their dreams come true.

This made some of the older students famous, including Citieney, who traveled to Paris last year to screen a film about her life called “Gogo”. “Gogo” means grandmother in her mother tongue. He is also expected to visit New York soon on the occasion of the screening of the film.

Sitienei, who is in the sixth grade of elementary schoolstates that her goal was much more practical than becoming a movie star.

The idea to return to her desks came when her great-granddaughter dropped out of school after becoming pregnant. “I jokingly asked her if she had any tuition left at school and she said yes, then I told her I would use it to start going to school.”

What she hoped was for her great-granddaughter to return to her classes, she added, but when she refused to return, Citizen decided to go to school.

In addition to her lessons, she also enjoys the school activities she has with her other great-grandchildren, including gymnastics.

“It keeps me in shape. I can jump, although not as much as others can, but at least I move my body. That is my joy,” he said.

Her teachers use her many years of experience to have peace in the classroom during the lessons.

“I made her a classmate for those who make a fuss in the classroom. She did it. When I go out, there is calm in the classroom,” said Leonida Talaam, her teacher.
