Volleyball player Rosamaria used social media to reassure fans. She currently lives in Japan, where she plays for the Denso Airybees team. An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 hit the north-central part of the country at around 4:10 pm (4:10 am Brasília time) this Monday (1st), causing fires and destruction on the west coast.

“In our region [Osaka]we felt the tremor, but with less intensity than in the most affected areas, where it reached 7.6 on the scale [Richter]. We are safe,” she said.

According to her, some areas were badly affected and are under tsunami warning. “Pray that further damage does not happen,” she added.

It was still unclear whether there were any deaths — hours after the tremors, information about possible victims was still scarce.

The earthquake, whose epicenter was in Ishikawa Prefecture, prompted warnings of five-meter tsunamis in the region where the municipalities of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama are located. The alert was later eased, with the announcement of the expectation of waves of a maximum of three meters after some of them reached one and a half meters in the port of Wajima.

Japanese government spokesman Hayashi Yoshimasa told an emergency meeting with journalists that authorities were still checking the extent of the damage and urged residents to prepare for possible additional earthquakes. Throughout the day, residents emptied areas that could be affected.
