New Smyrna one of the most popular neighborhoods near the center of Athens, is visited this Saturday, January 13, by Dimitris Skarmoutsos with “Neighborhoods on a Plate”!

Nea Smyrni is a pleasant stop between the center of Athens and the sea. A family neighborhood with the square as a reference point that its residents will hardly be separated from, since everyone finds their own hangout there.

First stop is “Doner TZH”, a small tavern in a quiet corner of New Smyrna that Yilmaz and his wife opened years ago. They serve exclusively oriental dishes that you will hardly find anywhere else. The menu includes itchli kiofte, mandi, imam baildi and spicy lahmajun as well as hearty kebabs with nice buttery rice.

“Fakafel”, which opened about a year ago in Nea Smyrni, put its own touch on the street food of the area. The star dish is the beluga lentil meatballs, usually accompanied by fresh tomato in sauce, cool avocado mousse, lettuce, cucumber and portobello mushrooms. And of course falafel!

Last stop an old tavern with a history of 70 years, “Mouria”. It took its name from the mulberry tree that the family’s grandmother planted in the yard and is the trademark. Here we will find all the goodies of Greek cuisine!

Returning to the studio, Dimitris Skarmoutsos prepares two separate recipes, covered pizza in the pan and spicy meatballs with tomato sauce.

See you next week in another neighborhood!
