Renewed interest in Nicolas Cage’s career has led many of the actor’s films to be re-evaluated in recent years, and from 1990s blockbusters to being classified as films of independent cinema. So the next Cage film to rise to the category of classics could be 1999’s Bringing Out the Dead directed by Martin Scorsese.

In an interview with Deadline, Cage talked about his love for Scorsese’s film.

“Yeah, I like this movie and I think it will stand the test of time,” Cage said. “I saw it again recently. I think Paramount+ has it. It hasn’t been done in digital high definition yet, but I’m looking forward to doing an interview about the film with Martin Scorsese for Paramount+, because I think the film deserves another look. I really think this is one of my best films.”

Cage went on to explain that he believes the film fell victim to a misleading marketing campaign that promised viewers a high-action thriller, when in fact it was an internal spiritual drama. But he expressed hope that the film’s restoration would one day help clear up the picture.

“But I think it was misconstrued,” he said. “The film was marketed in such a way – probably because I was doing adventure films – that people thought it was going to be an action/adventure film. Well, that wasn’t it. It was a very poignant character analysis, based on a very good book by Joe Connelly. But it was misunderstood and I think that this film, maybe when it’s done in high definition, it will be given another chance.”
