Prince Harry receives title of ‘Living Aviation Legend’ and war veterans revolt

by

It was supposed to be another tribute to Prince Harry, but it ended up becoming controversial. The youngest son of King Charles III received the “Living Legend of Aviation” award for his performance in the Royal British Army from actor and pilot John Travolta, in Los Angeles, USA. But the award caused outrage among some veterans.

“Naming Prince Harry an ‘Aviation Living Legend’ is an affront to the heroic Army pilots who accomplished feats that Harry did not,” said Colonel Richard Kemp, in an interview with The Sun.

The retired military officer pointed out that Harry doesn’t have any great military achievements to qualify for. He cited astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, who were awarded the title, as truly deserving of the award.

“Harry is a celebrity and a very well-known person, and of course this gives publicity to this award and the people who are promoting it,” he complained and added that other veterans had this thought. “But there are a lot of people in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Syria who are fighting terrorism,” Kemp commented.

The Duke of Sussex completed two tours of Afghanistan as a forward air controller and Apache helicopter pilot, having flown numerous training missions in the UK, US and Australia. In Afghanistan, he served as an air traffic controller from 2007 to 2008 and as an Apache pilot from 2012 to 2013.

In his memoir, “Spare”, Harry stated that he had killed 25 people while serving with the British Army in Afghanistan in the 2000s, and clarified that he felt “neither proud nor ashamed” of what happened.
