The documentary “Ibelin” about the positive side of the modern online experience and the connections made on the Internet, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, won the Netflix.

The film, directed by Benjamin Rhee, focuses on Norwegian gamer Mats Steen, who died of the degenerative disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy at the age of 25.

According to the official synopsis “His parents mourned the lonely and isolated life they believed he had led when they began receiving messages from online friends around the world.”

Netflix has acquired “Ibelin,” which, according to its director, honors the gamer community. Speaking to Variety ahead of the premiere, Benjamin Rhee said he hopes the documentary portrays the video game community in a positive light.

The documentary combines video games and real life to reveal hidden stories.

Ingvil Giske from Medioperatorene produced the film in collaboration with Norway’s VGTV.

Mats, as presented in the documentary, had spent many hours online cultivating meaningful relationships through his persona, ‘Ibelin Redwood’, a character in ‘World of Warcraft’.

The film takes viewers on a journey through the breadth of Mats Steen’s adventurous online life through reconstructed animated moments from his game, narratives from his blog entries and interviews with people who knew him as ‘Ibelin’ and presents a man with a complex thinking and feeling, friendly, which made many fellow community members open up and had an impact on their lives.
