Hollywood film productions were recognized for their on-screen and behind-the-scenes sustainability efforts at the American Media Association’s (EMA) Environmental Awards.

the movies ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘Extrapolations’, ‘Unstable’ and the documentary ‘Common Ground’ won awards, with the actress Laura Dern to be recognized with the EMA Ongoing Commitment Award for its activism in the fight against climate change.

At the event, held at Sunset Las Palmas Studios in Los Angeles, Laura Dern, narrator and producer of the documentary Common Ground, which follows the pioneers of the regenerative agriculture movement and the ways it can save the planet, began her speech by praising her co-stars on the film, according to THR.

She also praised her longtime public relations manager, Annette Wolf, and environmental activists like Ed Begley J.

He also referred to “the original heroines, my mother Diane Lund and her dear friend, Jane Fonda. A beacon of struggle for equality and justice in all things that, along with my mom, made me march for the first time at age 6 — I’m so grateful, Jane,” Dern said to Jane Fonda, who was among the crowd. He then sent a more urgent message, noting, “tonight we gather at a moment of crisis. Our planet, like our democracy, is under threat.”

The actress said that “the painful truth remains that despite our efforts, we are not winning this battle yet. We are not yet moving our entire planet into action or persuading people who disagree with us.”

He pointed out that far too many people in “red states” are experiencing climate change, whether they’re seeing its impact on the agricultural industry or dealing with rising ocean temperatures and increasingly dangerous storms. “Yet they are actively resisting the work we are asking them to do, work that will save their farms, rivers and cities,” he pointed out.
