The 4 steps to get -more- motivation and achieve your goals

by

We may be just in the second week of February, but for many of us, the increased motivation with which we started the new year already seems to have begun to fade.

And if you belong to this category, no one can blame you. With an ongoing pandemic and a flurry of frustrating and outrageous news, how do you put your productivity at the top of your list of priorities?

But the truth is that motivation and its importance extend beyond simple decisions. In fact, psychological studies have found that when our motivations are depleted, our function and well-being suffer.

Dr. Leela R. Magavi’s research suggests that motivation can be a tool in the fight against inevitable stress and that its presence can really help us grow better and live longer.

“It also enhances creativity and improves cognitive ability, and then leads to success in all areas of life, including relationships and performance at work,” writes the Journals of Gerontology on the study of aging. “It helps to cultivate a stronger sense of self, which often leads to improved physical health and well-being.”

So why are so many of us struggling to find and maintain our motivation, and what can we do about it?

Recent research suggests that the answer lies in a better understanding of the four steps of self-motivation.

“To motivate yourself, you have to either change the situation or change your understanding of the situation,” Arash Emamzadeh explains in an article for Psychology Today. “Self-motivation means being driven by a personal desire to set valuable goals and to focus, commit and move towards those goals despite obstacles.”

And indeed, there are four different elements that we can better understand to increase them.

Goal setting

Always keep in mind your final destination, says Emamzadeh. “Set a goal, not a means to an end,” he advises. Instead, set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-limited (SMART) goals that will help you stay on track, not feel “lost” and maintain the same healthy level of motivation throughout.

Pursuit of goals

In addition, to stay motivated, it is important to monitor your progress. When you start a business, your motivation is often at its peak. As you finish it and the end is visible, your motivation levels increase again. However, this moderate calm can often be detrimental, causing you to deviate from the routine and end up off track. To combat this, Emamzadeh suggests keeping the average period as short as possible to maintain interest, such as setting weekly instead of monthly targets.

This can also be helped by using intrinsic motivation – activities that are inherently beneficial and enjoyable. It’s a simple logic: if you want to improve your fitness, it will be much easier to maintain it if you really like what you do.

So remember that joy and achievement often come hand in hand.

Pay attention to the “how” you will achieve the goals

We seldom pursue a single goal, so we must learn to “juggle,” says Emamzadeh. To increase your commitment to the goal, choose many means to serve a single goal, such as spending less time on your phone and exercising more to commit to more self-care. To achieve more goals, you can use tools to serve multiple results, such as spending less time on your phone to increase both self-care and productivity.

However, if you feel that you are starting to lose motivation, it is better to return to activities that each serve a specific purpose. “Goal conflicts often involve the need to choose between something good short-term and something long-term,” writes Emamzadeh. “How to motivate yourself to be patient? Use distracting factors, remind yourself of the value of the goal and trust the process.

Ask for support

It’s good, and really good, to have some support from other people when it comes to your goals. “The mere presence of people increases motivation, magnifying what you do,” says Emamzadeh. In addition, others can set expectations for performance, provide resources, join you, and serve as role models, ”which increase motivation for yourself.

Therefore, do not be afraid to share your goals and progress with other people to help you achieve them. But remember: your goals must be to serve yourself first, not others.
