Singles, beware: There’s a new trend to avoid on the way to your next date
For those who are experienced in online datingthe meaning of spider webbing it may sound familiar. In a world where direct communication is now rare and shallow interactions are the norm, spider webbing represents a series of manipulative actions that gradually weave a complex, unhealthy “trap” in relationships. Just like a web, this set of toxic behaviors gradually “weaves” around the relationship, to the extent that you can no longer distinguish them clearly.
Emma Hathorndating expert at Seeking.com, explains, speaking to the Independent: “Spider webbing involves a series of manipulative behaviors that, over time, trap individuals in a relationship filled with emotional distress”. These behaviors range from ghosting and love bombing to gaslighting, which is common in today’s dating scene. The term collectively describes the impact of these actions when experienced simultaneously.
Hathorn stresses that it is extremely important for people who have fallen victim to spider webbing to understand it early. “Not only does it harm emotional well-being, it also undermines trust and authenticity in dating”he says, adding: “Toxic behaviors like spider webbing can cause permanent emotional damage, erode self-esteem, and create an atmosphere of mistrust and skepticism toward future relationships.”
She points out that “by recognizing and addressing this trend, we can work toward restoring dating as an enjoyable, respectful, and honest pursuit where people can truly connect and build meaningful relationships, free of manipulation and toxicity.”
How do you know if you are caught in spider webbing?
Hathorn points out a few key clues. An emotional rollercoaster in a relationship, constant criticism from your partner, “two standards” in the rules that govern relationships and a lingering feeling of restlessness are some of the main red flags.
“It’s important to monitor your emotional well-being and take these fluctuations seriously. “Healthy relationships should provide stability and support, not constant emotional upheaval,” reminds the expert.
She also suggests trusting your gut. This can, sometimes, tell you a lot about a “cloudy” situation. “Our intuition often serves as a powerful warning system. If your inner voice is sounding the alarm, listen to it, it has something to tell you.”
