On Saturday, February 10, Dimitris Skarmoutsos and “Neighborhoods on a Plate” guide us to the culinary treasures of Nice. The “new Kokkinia” was founded after the Asia Minor disaster and as the song says, it has always been the pride of Athens and Piraeus.
The first stop is for breakfast peignirli at “Poldo”. A shop that, since 1981, is famous for its puff pastry and also for its delicious filled dough boats, peignirli. Handmade pastry products that are made and eaten the same day.

In a small alley of the neighborhood is the “Aslanoglou Patisserie” which is also the second stop on Dimitris Skarmoutsou’s tour. A neighborhood patisserie of Asia Minor roots that started in 1965 as a dairy and now specializes in lesser-known political sweets. Seker pare, curcumbinia and isli are some of the delicacies that one finds in its windows.
Next stop is “Ionikos”, a favorite traditional fish tavern with fresh fish and seafood famous for grilled anchovies, fried shrimps and octopus giuvetti. Its history begins about 50 years ago as a coffee shop and over the years it has evolved into an excellent tavern.
The tour of Nice ends with a stop at the “Egyptiakon” for a traditional kebab. A family of Asia Minor from Adana arrived in the area in 1924 bringing with them the traditional kebab recipe.
The return to the studio brings two delicious recipes from Dimitris Skarmoutsos who prepares poached salmon with vegetables and Mexican chicken salad.
See you next week in another neighborhood!
