Works by Pablo Picasso Inspired by the Spanish-French Border at a Museum in Florida

by

Pablo Picasso’s recently discovered works are being exhibited for the first time in the United States at an exhibition in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The exhibition “Picasso and the Allure of the South” explores the influence of southern Europe on Pablo Picasso’s revolutionary work with a collection of 79 masterpieces, paintings, sketches and collages, 50% of which has never been exhibited in the US.

Instead of focusing on one period of Picasso’s life, as is the case in many exhibitions, this one focuses on the artist’s inspiration from a particular area: the Spanish-French border.

Born in southern Spain, Picasso became known for his work in France. While vacationing in the mountain towns of northern Spain and along the French Riviera, he painted many of his great works, including portraits, still lifes and landscapes.

“We always associated him with Paris, but he was obviously very embarrassed, he felt very uncomfortable in an urban environment,” said Peter Tass, senior curator at the Daly Museum in the Tampa news agency, WUSF. “He really felt more at home in this kind of countryside in the Mediterranean, and there he really seemed to be thriving and changing his ideas, and this is what the report shows,” he added.

Historical photographs of Picasso appearing in studios on the Spanish-French border are also included in the exhibition at the Salvador Dali Museum, organized in collaboration with the Picasso Museum in Paris.

With works from six decades of his prolific career, the exhibition is chronologically structured, showcasing Picasso’s early experiments and the evolution of Cubism, through his later works when he turned to a deeper engagement with the unconscious and surrealism.

Visitors can improve their understanding of the type of displacement through the YOUR PORTRAIT artificial intelligence experience, according to the Salvador Dali Museum website. In other words, they can transform their photography into a unique cubist work of art. As the portrait is created they are informed about the cubist images, compositions and color palettes along with how the machine learning application mimics these features.
