The awards are presented for the 5th consecutive year
The three best photo stories were awarded yesterday by Athens Photo World 2023 at an event at the Lighthouse of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC).
The event was presented by the journalist Evlampia Revis, who after a brief review of the year of Athens Photo World 2023 and its actions by Artistic work of Director Thanasis Stavrakis, discussed with Louisa Gouliamaki from the agency Reuters and photographer / freelancer Konstantinos Zelos on the challenges of modern photojournalism in Greece and the importance of photo essays.
Next, the organizing team Athens Photo World presented to the public the photographic works of the three finalists and announced the grand winner of the €2,000 cash prize, Antonis Pasvantis with the project. The last community.
This photographic project, as described by its creator, “investigates the lives and uncertain future of the remaining 4,000 Greek Alevis / Bektasis in the Evros region, exploring their social concerns through visual examination and field interviews”.
Panagiotis Rontos, with the “Mola” project, qualified for second place and will participate in a future mission of the Greek section of Doctors Without Borders. Rodou’s photographic work has been following for a year now, a gri-gri boat in Kavala which is just one example of the hundreds of boats with Egyptian fishermen in Greece.
Nikos Priporas with the project “Westland, a photographic exploration of the western side of Thessaloniki”, in third place will receive a Canon mirrorless camera from the photo shop Galaios Photostore.
Athens Photo World warmly thanks the Ministry of Culture, the Greek Department of Doctors Without Borders and Prodromos Galaios, the three members of the jury, Panagiotis Pappa, Nikos Pilos and Katia Christodoulou, for holding the competition for the 2023 Prize and all the photographers who participated with their work.
