Indonesia: First international flight arrives in Bali in almost two years

by

The tourist resort of Bali, Indonesia, today welcomed the first international tourist flight in almost two years, the governor of the island, Wayan Koster, announced during a press conference.

The visitors, 109 foreigners and 47 Indonesians, arrived on a Singapore Airlines flight. They are expected to be quarantined at a hotel for three to seven days, depending on the number of vaccine doses they have been given, the governor explained.

“We hope that at the beginning of March, tourists will no longer need to be quarantined once they meet the conditions and show negative tests,” the governor noted.

“Two years without being able to go to Bali is a lot,” said Emanuela, a Swiss tourist. “As soon as my friend told me that Bali was opening, I took the first flight,” he added.

“We know that with the Omicron wave, there may be ups and downs, but we believe that as long as the health rules are followed, we do not need to worry,” said Rai Wijaya, head of the Bali Hotels and Restaurants Association.

About 200 tourists were deported from Bali in 2021, seven of them for violating health rules, such as the obligation to use the mask.

In May, a Russian influencer and his partner, a Taiwanese YouTube star, were expelled from Indonesia after sparking a scandal as a young woman appeared in a video walking on a Bali beach with a mask painted on her face.

Yesterday, Indonesia recorded a record number of new Covid-19 cases due to the Omicron variant. The number of daily infections exceeded 57,000, according to the government coronavirus team, surpassing the previous high of 56,757 cases recorded in July, in the middle of the Delta wave.
