Johnny Depp, 58, received the Gold Medal of Merit from Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Tuesday (15). The state honor was given to the actor for his participation in the animated series “Puffins”, in which he plays a puffin.
In the justification of the tribute, Vucic cited “exceptional merits in public and cultural activities, especially in the field of cinematographic art and in the promotion of the Republic of Serbia in the world”. “Puffins” was performed by Serbian studio Archangel Digital Studios.
In his acceptance speech, Depp said he was willing to spend more time in the country. “I’m about to have a new life,” he commented. “I would love for a fresh start of mine to take place here in Serbia, if you will accept me. And I’m scared,” he added, quickly clarifying that that last sentence was a joke.
Depp had already been welcomed by Vucic last year when he was in Serbia to promote “Puffins”. In 2019, he also spent some time in the country while filming “Minamata”, on which occasion Vucic visited the film set.
The actor’s Hollywood career has been shaken after his ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic violence – he is suing her for defamation. In British justice, Depp lost a lawsuit against the tabloid The Sun for calling him a “wife beater”.
