Three young adults were arrested today in Antwerp on charges of planning a “terrorist attack of jihadist inspiration” aimed at “politicians”, in which they intended to use an unmanned aircraft, judicial authorities said.
Belgian newspapers write that the goal was Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever.
The arrests were made in the context of a investigation into a “attempted terrorist assassination and participation in the action of a terrorist group” explained the head of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office Ann Franchen at a press conference in Brussels.
“Some evidence shows that their intention was to commit a terrorist attack of jihadist inspiration against politicians. There is also evidence that their goal was to build an unmanned aircraft, in which they would tie a load, “he added.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office did not give any further clarifications to the “politicians” who had been targeted, but Flemish media assure the prime minister. According to the press, police investigated a house that is a few hundred meters from Bart De Wever’s residence in Antwerp.
During a suspect’s home research, an improvised explosive mechanism was found, which was not yet functional, as well as a backpack containing metal balls. A 3D printer was found at the second suspect’s house “for which we suspect they would be used to build objects that would serve them in committing the attack,” Franchen said.
The suspects are all adults, born in 2001, 2002 and 2007. The two have reported to the Judicial Police and will be brought to an investigator tomorrow. The third was released.
