The actor swept this year’s awards for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’
“I want to thank my traumatic childhood. And the Academy. In this order”. With these words Robert Downey Jr receives his first Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.
Before I go on, I’ve noticed three categories of people dominating social media these past few days: a) those who are cheering for RDJ’s win and believe he 100% deserved it and his talent was finally recognised, b) those who think RDJ was good , but Robert De Niro was better, c) those who think Mark Ruffalo was arguably the one who deserved the Oscar the most.
Personally, I’m somewhere between A and C. Mark Ruffalo truly gave the performance of the year in a role we’ve never seen before and never imagined. However, he had the misfortune (like all those who stood against all of Oppenheimer’s output) to be in the same category as his long-time friend and brother Robert.
Those of us who belong to his loyal fan club and have been following his artistic movements for years now, know that he deserved this particular recognition and his role in Christopher Nolan’s film was the best attempt to win it. And he did.
RDJ’s case belongs to a rare category of artists who manage to overcome their demons and come back strong, conquering the top and reaching the peak of their career. He belongs to those examples of people who teach you that it’s never too late and that no matter how deeply lost you are, you can always find yourself again.
