Legendary funk and disco singer Chaka Khan is to take over the reins of Southbank Centre’s annual Meltdown Music Festival in London following in the footsteps of previous curators David Byrne, Grace Jones, Yoko Ono, David Bowie and Patti Smith.

The UK’s largest Arts Center’s annual Festival is curated each year by a music icon.

“Chaka Khan celebrates 50 years of a ground-breaking career, bringing her incredible voice and global influence to the Southbank Center during the ten-day Summer Festival,” organizers say.

“It’s impossible to categorize the irresistible gift of Khan’s immense vocal range, which has earned her ten Grammys, induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023,” they note.

Chaka Khan will open the Festival on June 14 with a concert of her greatest hits. She will also return to close Meltdown on June 23 with the first live performance of her 2004 album ClassiKhan, alongside the Nu Civilization Orchestra. Recorded at London’s iconic Abbey Road, the record is her take on classic band hits: from Hey Big Spender to Diamonds are Forever.

The singer has invited Broadway singer and actor Todrick Hall, acid jazz band Incognito (June 19), Kae Tempest, Young Fathers, Speakers Corner Quartet, Mica Paris, Judi Jackson, Lady Blackbird and Morcheeba to this year’s Festival.
