Franco-American writer Mark Green was honored today with the Jean Frestier prize for the novel “Réel Madrid” in which he recounts his youth during the Franco dictatorship in Spain.

The Jean Frestier Prize, first awarded in 1987, is one of the most important literary prizes in France and comes with a cash prize of 25,000 euros.

It is named after the author who won the Renado Prize in 1970. It is usually awarded to emerging authors whose work has not been sufficiently recognized.

“Réel Madrid” was released in September by the publishing house Plein Jour. The story takes place in Madrid in the 1960s and 1970s, a capital very different from what it is today.

Although Mark Green has the perspicacity to capture moments of historical change, he is first and foremost a writer sensitive to time, shadows, the past.”commented a member of the jury, writer Christian Autier.
