James Cameron’s epic ‘Titanic’ – when it was released in 1997 – sparked intense debate about the finale and whether the wooden plank that saved ‘Rose’ (Kate Winslet in the film) from the icy waters of the Atlantic had room for “Jack” (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) to “step up” and save himself.

This wooden lifeline – one of the most iconic items from the film – sold at Heritage Auctions’ ‘Treasures from Planet Hollywood’ for $718,750 (£567,561).

The ornate piece of wood, which had the most bids among 1,600 iconic movie items according to the house, was “actually part of the door frame that stood at the entrance to the first-class lounge of the movie set.

The same auction sold for $125,000, the chiffon dress worn by Kate Winslet in the final scene of the film, the ship’s rudder ($200,000) and the brass telegraph ($81,250).

Harrison Ford’s whip from ‘Temple of Doom’ also set a record as the franchise’s most valuable item, fetching $525,000.

After a bidding war, Jack Nicholson’s ax from “The Shining” sold for $125,000, the same price as the black suit worn by Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 3.
