Until now the director of the National Gallery in London Dr Nicholas Callinan appointed the management of the British Museum to the management of the institution.

The arrival of the 46-year-old British-American art historian at the museum follows his departure Hartwig Fischer following the revelation of the theft of approximately 1,800 items from the institution’s warehouses over a number of years.

The British Museum has filed a lawsuit against the former curator of Greek and Roman antiquities for the thefts Peter Higgs.

Dr Callinan will take over in the summer, succeeding the veteran Sir Mark Joneswho was asked to temporarily take over the position of director by the chairman of the trustees of the British Museum George Osborne.

In a statement Mr Osborne spoke of the successful extensive refurbishment of the National Gallery under the supervision of Dr Callinan, referring to the upcoming major refurbishment of the British Museum
