Lara Croftits protagonist Tomb Raider video game serieshas been named the most iconic video game character of all time in a new poll by British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

The poll was participated by more than 4,000 players from all over the world and was held to celebrate the 20th Bafta Game Awards, which will take place on 11 April.

Lara Croft topped the poll ahead of Mario, from the Nintendo franchise of the same name, and hitman Agent 47 from the Hitman series.

Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man, Link – the silent protagonist of the Legend of Zelda games – and Halo star Master Chief made the top 10.

Lara Croft first appeared in 1996 as the heroine of the Tomb Raider games and has since been reimagined many times for television, film, and other video games.

She has been portrayed on the big screen by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.

Shelley Blonde, the first actress to lend her voice to Lara Croft, said: “I had no idea when I voiced the original Tomb Raider game that it would be such a global phenomenon.”

The 20th BAFTA Games Awards will take place at the Southbank Center in London on April 11 and will be streamed on BAFTA’s YouTube, Twitch and X platforms.
