Kirsten Dunst said her new film about a civil war breaking out in the US is a “warning” not to “you take democracy for granted.”
The actress plays a photojournalist in the film “Civil War”which is set in a dystopian near future where the country has turned into a dictatorship under the president in his third term.
Written and directed by British writer Alex Garland, A24’s film follows a group of war correspondents as they race against time to reach Washington, D.C., before the insurgents approach the White House.
Asked if she feared the story might come true, Kirsten Dunst told PA news agency: “There’s a dialogue going on all over the world, so we made the film with that feeling in mind.”
“Don’t take your democracy for granted and see each other as human beings instead of taking these extreme positions behind your phone or computers,” the actress said of the film’s messages.
“I think this is a warning, in a way, and an anti-war film for me,” he added.
Garland explained that he wanted to put the journalists at the center of the film because he wanted to present them as “heroes”.
I felt that journalists have been attacked in a very complicated way for a long time and people, in many ways, don’t trust them anymore, he noted.
