Lapis Lazuli, the new idiosyncratic show by Euripides Laskaridis, on the Main Stage of Stegi. The grotesque, the comic and the terrifying coexist in a work on the border of performance, dance and visual arts.

“The work is addressed to those who recognize how touching the funny side of life is, to those who are not looking for messages and lessons, to those who do not take themselves seriously.”

How far is a scream from a laugh?

After the completion of three works, which continue to tour with warm reception and laudatory comments around the world, RELIC (2015), TITANES (2017) and ELENIT (2019), Evripidis Laskaridis presents in a world premiere at Stegi, from 4 to 21 April, his new international co-production, Lapis Lazuli, before embarking on a major international tour. Able to create magic with the most heterogeneous and humble materials, inventor of a hybrid kind of spectacle, on the borders of performance, dance and visual arts, the grandiose and the deliberately ridiculous, Euripides Laskaridis returns with the creation of yet another idiosyncratic show, where the elements of the grotesque, the comic and the terrifying coexist. Continuing his investigation into the concepts of transformation and the ridiculous, Laskaridis attempts to recreate a charming and mysterious world, welcoming to his strange, capricious, but also sensitive characters. The title of his new work (Lapis Lazuli) refers to the semi-precious stone with its characteristic blue color.

Lapis lazuli is a metamorphic rock that exhibits unpredictable behavior under great pressure. From the mask of Tutankhamen to the Renaissance paintings of Titian and the (post)modernist examples of Yves Klein’s monochromatic works, lapis lazuli has graced countless works of art with its vibrant and mysterious color

.

In Lapis Lazuli, Euripides Laskaridis focuses on our existential relationship with fear and the terrifying and seeks to explore a series of dipoles, such as the material with the spiritual, the dreamlike with the nightmarish and the conscious with the unconscious, thus constructing on stage a dense web of contrasts. These contrasting relations are found – unexpectedly for the creator and performer – even in the very name of the rock, which etymologically is a combination of the Latin word lapis (stone) and the Arabic lāzurd (blue), which has its root in the Persian lājevard (heaven). Therefore, lapis lazuli is often referred to as the “Stone from Heaven”.

Laskaridis says about the project: “My starting point is different and it is imposed on me unexpectedly. Typically, it takes two years to complete each project, from the conception of an initial idea or character. In Lapis Lazuli, the main character “visited” me for the first time in a dream, in February 2022, in Liege. Since then, I have been searching for this character’s world. In most of my works I avoid the use of speech, mainly so that the meaning is not trapped. Thus, unintelligible speech often intervenes, along with other elements such as light, objects, music, the movement of bodies, objects and lights, and even sounds. Lapis Lazuli seems to complete something, it speaks to everything I’ve done. At the same time, I have the feeling that there is something new here, which, however, as soon as I am asked to talk about it, it automatically dazzles. So I pretend I don’t see it. We expect the ending to surprise us too.”
