In an effort to attract viewers, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that this year’s Oscars will announce the results of a vote of the public who are invited to choose their favorite movie and favorite movie moment.
Voting has already started, it will last until March 3 and in fact three lucky people who will be selected after a draw will be present at next year’s ceremony and will present a prize!
And while the broader belief was that Spider-Man’s No Way Home will prevail comfortably and this was a way to have a significant presence at the award ceremony, the results so far have a different μη opinion.
And that’s because in the first hours we had a bombardment of votes for the Justice League Snyder Cut, which is not eligible to participate and then the first went to an unexpected player: Amazon’s Cinderella with Camila Cabello in the lead role.
The film was originally owned by Sony but sold its rights to Amazon, it easily retains the lead at the moment and has already started a murmur in Hollywood about the Academy’s move to do this poll via Twitter.
We remind you that the public will again be able to choose their favorite scene of the year via twitter, simply by using the hashtag #OscarsCheerMoment. In this case five lucky winners will win one-year tickets to movie theaters, subscriptions to streamig services and items from the movie museum.
Back in 2019 the Academy was very close to establishing an Oscar for most popular film, with the aim of encouraging the younger audience to attend the ceremony, but the plan was abandoned after reactions from its members and critics.
Nominations for this year’s awards
Two weeks ago, the Oscar nominations were announced for the 94th ceremony that will take place on March 27 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
Power of the Dog, Jane Campion’s film, swept with twelve nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Two for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. With ten nominations, Dune follows, which will claim, among others, for the best film.
Belfast, Coda, Don’t Look Up, Drive my Car, King Richard, Licorice Pizz, Nightmare Alley and West Side Story will also claim the Oscar for Best Picture.
It is worth noting that Jane Campion became the first woman to receive two Oscar nominations for directing, having also been nominated in 1994 with The Piano.
Kenneth Branagh, who wrote the screenplay and directed Belfast, made history by becoming the first to be nominated in seven different categories.
The absences from the nominations that caused the biggest surprise are definitely those of Lady Gaga and Ruth Nega from the race for the first female role, Leonardo DiCaprio for the first male role and Danny Villeneuve from the direction.
