Spyros Loui’s trophy which the marathon runner won in 1896 “travels” to Paris where it will be exhibited in the Louvre museum.

In particular, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation is lending the relic for a periodic exhibition dedicated to the revival of the Olympic Games.

From April 24 to September 16, the Cup will be one of the main exhibits of the periodic exhibition “Olympism. A modern invention, an ancient heritage” which is organized in collaboration with the French School of Athens on the occasion of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in Paris.

Visitors to the Louvre museum will have the opportunity to admire up close the Silver Cup, bearing the inscription of Michel Bréal: “Olympic Games 1896, marathon athlon edoken, Michel Bréal”, through which his aim was to connect the Olympic Races of the ancients with the moderns.

It is noted that the historical relic was purchased by the SNF at a Christie’s auction when it was put up for sale by the runner’s grandson.

The acquisition of the Cup was accompanied by the immediate commitment of the Foundation to make it accessible to the general public and to share it with everyone, exhibiting it permanently at the KIΣN after its completion.
