The mayor of the city of Surfside, Florida (USA), did not like the way the local police approached Brazilian übermodel Gisele Bündchen, 43, recently. In a video that went viral on social media, she cries as she tells the agent that she stopped her car as she was fleeing paparazzi.
Charles W. Burkett says the interaction was “totally unacceptable,” according to TMZ. The publication states that the politician sent a letter addressed to the city’s interim police chief, Henry Doce, to complain about the way Gisele was treated.
This week, the model had her car stopped after driving erratically. When the guard approached, Gisele said she was being followed by paparazzi and started crying. “I was just trying to get away from that guy,” she said. “I’m so tired. Everywhere I go there are these guys following me. Nothing protects me. I can’t do anything. I just want to live my life.”
The police officer let the model go with just a warning, but said he couldn’t do anything about the chase. He just said that she should register the incident. “I can’t stop them from doing their job, which is taking photos,” she said.
In his letter about the episode, Mayor Burkett said he was “dismayed” when he watched the video, which was recorded by the officer’s own body camera. He says the officer’s stance was “dismissive” and “everything we don’t want to see when our police interact with and serve our residents.”
Burkett said the officer should have shown “more empathy” and said he could have taken a better approach. There is still no information on whether he will suffer any disciplinary punishment.
