Although several studies have been done, unfortunately, no project is at the tender stage and the damages that the castle has suffered, one of the largest in the Balkans, are getting bigger and bigger.
The danger from collapses that runs through this great monument of Messinia had presented in detail in his report “Courage” in February, with important sections having already collapsed or are ready to collapse.
The castle is collapsing
The Association of Friends of Methoni Castle raised as the main topic of the general assembly held in the previous days the restoration works of the castle, which are foreseen by the programming contract for the preparation of the relevant studies, which was signed on April 6, 2021!
The general assembly of the association, with its unanimous decision, strongly protests the delay in completing the studies, as a result of which there is no longer the possibility of including the projects in the Recovery Fund, as had been officially announced.
It also expresses the strong concern of its members and friends over the fact that even the urgent restoration project of the western wall – which is heavily damaged and whose study was approved months ago by the Central Archaeological Council – has not even been auctioned, with risk of new collapses, much larger than those in 2020 and 2021.
In fact, the general assembly instructed the association’s Board of Directors to take whatever actions it deems necessary for the immediate start of the projects. The actions to be taken will be decided by the Board of Directors. of the Association at its next meeting.
Studies only
In April 2021, a programming contract was signed between the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Peloponnese and the Municipality of Pylos – Nestoros for the restoration and promotion of Methoni Castle, as well as the execution of supporting archaeological works.
In August 2022, the study for the restoration of the western sea wall was commissioned. Large-scale problems are recorded there, while the point continues to receive great pressure from the strong waves and winds. It is the part of the castle for which there are the greatest fears that it may collapse.
In May 2023, by decision of the Minister of Culture, the architectural study was approved, as well as the static study for fixing and restoring the western sea wall of the southern enclosure of the castle. The final study of the western wall has been completed and approved by KAS.
This year, at the beginning of February, by decision of the relevant Directorate of Monument Restoration of the Ministry of Culture, the preparation of the study to take measures to fix and restore the coastal eastern wall (towers and post-tower spaces) of Methoni Castle was commissioned.
In fact, the ministry’s decision emphasizes that there is an urgent need to speed up the commissioning process for the preparation of the study for the rescue of the eastern sea wall of the castle, which is why it was commissioned.
Also, the study of the Acropolis (military section) is at the stage of completion, while its approval by the KAS and the drawing up of tender documents will follow.
There remains, however, the assignment of the study for Bourji, which is also facing problems.
