Ludmilla was described as “the next Brazilian pop star” by the British newspaper The Guardian, which interviewed her after her show at Coachella, the biggest music festival in the world. She spoke about singing in Portuguese to the festival audience and commented on the accusation of religious prejudice.
The singer is presented to the British as the most listened to black artist in Brazil and “one of the only women of Afro-Latin heritage to reach one billion streams on Spotify and perform a set on the main stage at Coachella”. The newspaper highlights that Beyoncé is an admirer of hers and participated in the show by sending an audio message to introduce her: “From Rio to Coachella, ladies and gentlemen, Ludmilla!”.
The singer said that she was relieved after the performance in Portuguese and that she feels satisfied with the result, which is already bearing fruit: “I sing in Portuguese and that can be difficult for an international audience. I had a goal and I achieved it. This week I received several invitations for collaborations”.
Ludmilla spoke about racial prejudice suffered at the beginning of her career: “When I started as a singer, I was a victim of racism and I used to suffer in silence. But now I know how important I am and how I can help women like me.”
“It’s infuriating,” she said of the accusations of religious bias drawn from the video shown at the show. “I saw a lot of Brazilian people crucifying me on social media, just because of racism. This is a fight I can’t just give up on.”
Lud also spoke about his marriage to Brunna Gonçalves and the scenario of LGBTQIA+ relationships in Brazil: “It’s not the best scenario, but we’ve evolved and we can’t go back on this issue”, she says. “Many bisexual and lesbian women told me after my Coachella show that they felt represented,” she added.
