Mural was painted on Blackwood to honor them Manic Street Preacherswhich are depicted as they were in 1991.

The graffiti artist Paul Shepherd from Karfili participates in the project Valley Street Art in which residents donate their walls to create works of art.

When someone decided to donate their wall at Blackwood in County Caerphilly o Paul Shepherd who signs his works as Walls by Paul, said he couldn’t resist.

The Manic Street Preachers formed in the city in 1986 and enjoyed worldwide success.

So the fact that it took 38 years for graffiti to appear from where it all started is perhaps a little surprising.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, the artist said: “I’ve really wanted to do a Manic Street Preachers mural for quite some time” so when a wall was offered to Blackwood, “I jumped at it”.

“As I was painting, many people came up to me and asked ‘who are they?’, as the band is unrecognizable today.”

The mural features Richie Edwards, who disappeared from the Embassy Hotel in London before a flight to America in 1995.

His car was found abandoned near the old Severn Bridge, but no trace of him was ever found.

The creator of the graffiti said his work is a “tribute” to the guitarist.

“The 90s for me are the Manics,” he emphasized.
