The film centers on a love triangle between three tennis players with a deep competitive spirit both on and off the court.

A key element of the film is the soundtrack composed by two-time Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Inspired by his style Berlin and 90s rave music, the music heightens the stress and strain in the scenes.

The film had two elements that were very strong in terms of sound,” said director Luca Guantanino. “One was the amorous crunching pulse of tennis. The racket swings, the ball hits, bones are crushed. And on the other hand, the pulse and energy of the musical theme” he noted.

The music makers earlier released the Challengers [Mixed]with DJ and producer Boys Noize mixing their original compositions from the film into a continuous, ready-made set.

Reznor and Ross have been working together in the band Nine Inch Nails and have been composing music for films for 5 years, starting with 2010’s The Social Network.
