A cruise ship arrived at the port of New York, United States, last Saturday (4) with a dead whale stuck in the bow. The mammal, which was about 13 meters long, belongs to the sei whale species, or Balaenoptera borealisone of the largest whales that lives in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans and is a protected species.
According to The New York Times, the animal’s body was discovered as the ship approached the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, and authorities were “immediately notified”, said MSC Cruises, owner of the vessel.
A necropsy, an autopsy carried out on an animal this Tuesday (7), identified it as an adult female and the question now is whether her death occurred before or after contact with the ship. The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, a nonprofit organization based in Hampton Bays, New York, is following the investigation.
The boat involved in the accident was the Meraviglia, from MSC Cruises, which docked in New York before leaving for Canada. Those responsible said in a statement that as soon as they noticed the problem they notified the competent authorities and that the company has regulations in place to prevent collisions with whales and other animals at sea.
