Joke or complaint? King Charles joked today Thursday, saying that “he was allowed out of his cage,” as the British monarch visited a military training school in another public appearance since returning to royal duties after his cancer diagnosis.

“I apologize for surprising you, but when this opportunity arose and I was allowed out of my cage, I wanted to come and see,” he told soldiers as he met staff and their families at the school in southern England.

The 75-year-old king “felt very encouraged” returning to his duties, Buckingham Palace said.

Charles’ public appearance was his second in two days after hosting a garden event at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

Nine months after he ascended the throne in May 2023, the palace announced in early February that Charles is suffering from cancer, which he discovered following prostate surgery in January. The nature of cancer and the progression of the disease were never clarified.

Charles then suspended all his public activities, however continued the duties of the constitutional monarch, which mainly provide for him to sign laws, meet frequently with the prime minister and ratify certain appointments.
