The 77th Cannes Film Festival is just around the corner and we take a look at which 10 highly anticipated films from top directors will premiere this year
It’s that time of year again for the start of the Cannes Film Festival, one of the biggest film festivals in the world. The 77th edition will run from May 14 to 25 with Greta Gerwig as president of the jury.
This year’s program includes films by great directors, many of which have been talked about for years. Let’s explore in detail the 10 movies we can’t wait to finally see in theaters…
-
David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds: Competition Section
Summary: Karsh, a businessman, after the death of his wife, invents a technology, GraveTech, which allows communication with the dead.
This is Cronenberg’s brief comeback, two years after the “Crimes of the Future”, which hadn’t received the rave reviews we expected. Let’s see what happens this time! Starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger and Guy Pearce.
-
Anora by Sean Baker: Competition Section
Summary: Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, marries the son of a Russian oligarch completely out of the blue. When his parents hear the news, they travel all the way to New York with the intention of calling off their wedding.
Its director “The Florida Project” and “Red Rocket” returns with a film that seems to flirt with a favorite theme of his, that of the frayed American dream.
-
Kinds of Kindness by Giorgos Lanthimos: Competition Section
Summary: Three stories. A man tries to take his life into his own hands. A police officer begins to think his wife’s behavior is different after she returns from a supposed drowning at sea. A woman is desperate to find that special someone to be the next spiritual leader.
This is the return of Efthymis Philippou in a script directed by Giorgos Lanthimos – the last one was “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”. In this modular story we meet an outstanding cast, which consists of Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer. Having won the Golden Lion in Venice last year, is it time for him to receive the Palme d’Or this year?
-
Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis: Competition Section
Summary: Cesar Catilina, an idealistic architect, wishes to rebuild New York but as a sustainable utopia with the counterpoint brought by the regressive and corrupt Mayor Franklin Cicero. Opposing the visions of both is Franklin’s daughter Julia, who is trying to find the deeper meaning of her existence.
Almost 50 years after the idea was first conceived – in 1977! – this grandiose plan by Coppola, worthy of the protagonist, became a reality and many still can’t believe it. Known for making movies that cost, literally and figuratively, his own fortune, Coppola didn’t give up and thus managed to complete his idea for a Roman epic in modern America! Starring Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter and Dustin Hoffman.
