The Oscar-winning star was awarded an honorary Palme d’Or and accepted her award with a humane, spontaneous and moving speech
The 77th Cannes Film Festival kicked off yesterday, with a glittering opening ceremony and starring the one and only Meryl Streep.
The Oscar-winning star was awarded the special honorary Palme d’Or for her entire career and her contribution to the cinema and accepted her award with a humane, spontaneous and moving speech, amidst a prolonged applause.
In 1989, the American actress won the best actress award for Fred Skepci’s Scream in the Dark, and since that time no film of hers has entered the competition.
Juliette Binoche presented Meryl Streep with the award and cried as she spoke about the famous actress. “You have carved an indelible path in the history of cinema. You are an international treasure. What I felt watching your movies is that you should fulfill our dreams, your dreams and more. You’ve changed the way we see women in the film world and you’re also helping us see ourselves differently,” Binoche told Streep on stage with tears in her eyes.
In turn, Streep said, “35 years ago, when I was here for the first time, I was already a mother of three children. I was about to turn 40 and I thought my career was over. Thank you for this such a unique award in the world of cinema – it is a great honor to accept it.’
The festival will run until May 25, 2024 and will close with a special Palme d’Or to “Star Wars” creator George Lucas.
