The EBU gave its own answer for this year’s episodic event
A few days after the grand final of Eurovision last Saturday in Malmö, Sweden, and the winner was Switzerland, the EBU gave its own response to this year’s episodic organization and the complaints of a bad atmosphere from many delegations of countries that participated in the 68th contest and blame the organizing authority for “bad climate”.
For example, Bambie Thug from Ireland stated among other things “we are Eurovision not the EBU”, and was among the contestants who complained to the EBU about the organization, as they were harassed by the Israeli delegation but the EBU did not care.
A similar attitude from Angelina Mango from Italy who spoke of a very bad atmosphere on behalf of the organizers in Malmö.
With its official announcement, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) officially acknowledges what various contestants have attributed to it for the Malmö event.
Eurovision Song Contest organizers said they were “sorry” that some delegations “did not respect the spirit of the rules” in Sweden and acknowledged that several contestants had lodged complaints.
“We spoke to a number of delegations during the event about various issues that were brought to our attention,” the statement said.
“The governing bodies of the EBU, together with the heads of delegations, will review the events surrounding Eurovision in Malmö to move forward in a positive way and ensure that the values of the event are respected by all”, it is also stated and it is emphasized that the individual instances of the issues raised will be discussed at a later date.
The answer to the ban of the Dutchman Joost Klein
The organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest have defended the exclusion of Dutch contestant Joost Klein from the competition.
“Joost’s conduct clearly breached the competition’s rules which are designed to ensure that there is a safe working environment for all staff and to protect the production,” the EBU said in a statement.
“The version of events published in some media and on social media does not correspond to the complaints shared with us and the Swedish police by staff and witnesses,” the organizers stress.
“We are not prejudging the legal process but, given the circumstances of what happened and the fact that the case will soon be handed over to the prosecutor, it would not be appropriate for Joost to participate in the grand final.”
The EBU says that the decision to ban the Dutch “Europapa” was unanimously supported by the EBU’s executive board, “following a thorough internal investigation”.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior at our events and will always take the necessary steps to deal with threats to staff – regardless of who they come from,” the statement concluded.
