United Arab Emirates is not just Dubai (come on, Abu Dhabi too)
We start with a Geography lesson: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is not only Dubai (well, Abu Dhabi too) as most of us mistakenly believe. It is a federal state consisting of 7 emirates, at the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, with Abu Dhabi as its capital and Dubai as its largest city. The remaining 5 remain in the shadow of these two and are “unknown” to world travelers.
Among them is the emirate of Sharjah – with the eponymous capital being the third largest and third most populous city in the Emirates.
Sharjah is located along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf in the Arabian Peninsula and has been ruled by the Al Qasimi dynasty since the 18th century, with strict Islamic laws.
The city is regarded as the cultural capital of the UAE and was the Islamic Capital of Culture in 2014.
Impressive skyscrapers dot the city’s skyline, alongside impressive buildings such as Al Qasimia University and the new Sharjah Mosque.
The city covers an approximate area of 235 sq km. and has a population of approximately 1,500,000 people.
As alcohol is prohibited in the emirate and not served in hotels and restaurants, Sharjah attracts mainly Muslim tourists.
