Author and photographer Susan Kaufman highlights the charm and beauty of the homes and streets of the Hamptons in her new book “Walk With Me: Hamptons.”
The Hamptons have an international reputation as a glamorous summer destination for the rich and famous, with grand mansions hidden behind exquisitely manicured walls. But there is another side to it East End of Long Island which is more grounded and magical in every season. It’s the Hamptons that readers will come to know and love in “Walk With Me: Hamptons,” says the book’s synopsis.
Susan Kaufman researched each town and village and pored over the archives of Art & Architecture Quarterly, an online publication for East End urban preservation.
The author visited the Hamptons with her family for the first time when she was eight years old and learned more about the resort while working for various fashion magazines and going to Montauk for photo shoots. About 30 years ago, she bought a house in Amagansett with her husband, Sean Young.
Most of the photos featured in the book are from last spring and show the charming and historic side of the Hamptons, classic stone houses, rose gardens, windmills, quaint inns and beautiful beaches.
Within the book’s pages are a map of the Hamptons and points of interest selected by Susan Kaufman, who chose for the cover a photo of a historic building much of which is covered with wisteria, a creeper with striking purple flowers.
“It’s just one of the most beautiful places in the world. There are very few places like the Hamptons with incredible beaches, lush gardens and a mix of such incredible architecture. And that’s what I wanted to capture,” said Susan Kaufman, who worked as a magazine fashion editor for years, in an interview with the NYT.
The book ‘Walk With Me: Hamptons’ will be published by the publishing house Abrams Image will be released on June 20.
