The mosque was built in 1587-78 in honor of General Recep Pasha who participated in the siege of Rhodes in 1522 by Suleiman the Magnificent.
The Redzep Pasha Mosque, a designated historical monument, in Dorieos Square, in the Medieval Town of Rhodes, is considered one of the most important monuments of Ottoman architecture on the island. The restoration of the mosque, the neoclassical school, the mansion of Hassan Bey, the Precinct are some of the projects that the Ministry of Culture is currently implementing in the Medieval City, with a total budget of approximately 20,000,000 euros.
Restoration work
The maintenance and restoration works of the burial monument-mausoleum, as well as the shaping of its surrounding area, are carried out by the competent services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with resources from the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
The mausoleum, which is the subject of the restoration study, is part of the mosque complex and is part of the project of conservation, restoration and promotion of the Redzep Pasha Mosque. The pathology presented by the building is due to the aging of the materials, the exposure to weather conditions, as well as the contact with rubble and portable materials from the neighboring plot.
The restoration work includes the uncovering, maintenance and aesthetic restoration of its design decoration, the removal of fragile coatings inside the dome and the construction of new ones after the sanitation of the background, where necessary, the maintenance of the marble elements and the restoration of their original arrangement.
The highlighting of the surrounding area includes the configuration of the exterior of the mosque complex and the mausoleum. Sanitary facilities are being built in the section behind the mausoleum and a warehouse. It is also planned to rehabilitate and reconstruct the stone fence around the plot, where it has fallen, and install a wooden railing, like the existing one, coating the entire courtyard area with anti-slip, stabilized natural flooring for the comfortable movement of people with mobility difficulties and wheelchairs, but and construction of a flower bed – living room in a central part of the yard, where plane trees are planned to be planted.
